Knowing that the genetic code is universal tells us that the RNA of any organism can transcribe a human gene. Finding a way to cut the human DNA sequence exactly, specifically, was the first step in genetic engineering. Once cut, the DNA could be removed from the human genome and inserted into the genome of a different organism. We begin on the simplest level - cutting DNA from a bacteria and inserting it into the plasmid of another bacteria:
