In May 2, 2002, the 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision on Buck v. Bell, Virginia Governor Mark Warner publicly apologized for Virginia's past involvement in eugenics. He said, "The eugenics movement was a shameful effort in which state government never should have been involved." The State of Virginia approved a roadside marker in memory of Carrie in her hometown of Charlottesville. The governors of California, Oregon, North Carolina, and South Carolina also issued apologies.
